How the estimator works
The tool uses broad teaching ranges for average progress under way rather than claiming an exact historical speed. It then widens the result according to the selected conditions. The numbers are intended for comparison, not for asserting that a specific undocumented voyage took a precise number of days.
Why historical passage time varies so much
Sailing ships respond to wind direction, sea state, currents, sail handling, route choice, night sailing, repairs and stops. Two passages over the same nominal distance can differ sharply. A vessel may also spend days waiting in harbour before conditions allow departure.
